This is a recently completed whole home renovation in the Southwood Valley neighborhood.

This home renovation was quite the undertaking but resulted in a stunning finished product. The clients’ goal was to transform their dated home to live out their retirement.

This home, built in the 1990s, needed many cosmetic, technical, and functional upgrades to make it a more enjoyable living space. In addition, our clients desired an interior that was more modern in style and designed for aging in place.

With these goals in mind, we transformed a traditional home full of brown tones and dated features into a clean, modern home that our clients could continue to live in for years to come.

One of the home’s most significant transformations occurred in the kitchen.

To create more open space and a better flow between the dining room, we demolished the existing pantry to widen and heighten the kitchen and dining room doorway. Because of this wider opening, we could create a more oversized island for additional prep space.

In the kitchen, we installed all new custom cabinetry which we painted in a stunning bright white color. When you create custom cabinets, you can add unique built-ins, which is a game changer for kitchen organization.

We added the following custom cabinet built-ins:

  • A trash can pull-out

  • A spice drawer

  • A double-level utensil drawer

  • Floor-to-ceiling custom cabinets with different-sized pull-outs (to make up for the lost pantry space)

  • A KitchenAid slow-cook warming drawer

We topped the cabinets with a white quartz countertop with elegant gray veining. Above the countertops, we installed a beautiful marble-look tile backsplash that complements the colors in the countertops well. We also added a large farmhouse sink and replaced all kitchen appliances.

Right next to the kitchen, we updated the laundry room. This included new cabinetry, with drawers underneath the washer and dryer which raised them to a height that was more accessible for our clients. In addition, we added an ice machine next to the current wine fridge in the laundry room.

In the living room, we replaced the large, oversized cabinetry on each side of the fireplace with new, built-in bookshelves.

This change not only made the space look better and feel more open, but the functionality of the space also improved, as the clients were able to access their large collection of books.

To update the fireplace, we whitewashed the brown brick to give it a clean, modern look. By whitewashing instead of painting, some of the brown tones were able to come through which matched well with some of the brown tones in the floor.

To complete the transformation, we built a new, modern mantel that is simpler in form. Hidden behind the bottom of the mantel is a space for hooks for stockings at Christmas, so that the clients only see the stockings and not the unsightly hooks.

We painted the mantel and bookshelves in the same beautiful dark gray color as the kitchen island to make them really stand out and create a connection between the two spaces. We also repainted and replaced the doors on the cabinets underneath the windows a bright white color to make them look more modern in style and match the style of the cabinetry throughout the house.

The whole room was repainted with cool grey undertones to bring a touch of modern sophistication. In addition, we replaced the fans and breakfast nook lighting fixture to make the space more modern.
