How often have you looked at a specific room in your house, wishing you could refresh the space? While many of our projects are completely remodeled, so often, we have clients that want a refresh on a specific space in their home.

This client’s home was built in 2003, so a  significant amount of work was not necessary or even desired! The clients were happy with the layout and functionality of the space, but they didn’t love how it looked.

Operation Refresh! We updated the appearance of the kitchen, dining area, and living room of the home.

In its existing state, the kitchen contained dark wood-stained cabinets, a light beige stone backsplash, and a brown floor tile resembling the ranch-style aesthetic.  The kitchen walls were lined with a yellow and beige striped wallpaper, while the walls in the adjacent spaces were a lighter beige.

The immediate change that happened was replacing the outdated paneling on the kitchen island. This simple task was such a game-changer!  After spending some time listening to the clients, we decided that the main goal was to improve the already successful functionality of the space and ultimately, give it an updated look and feel!

As mentioned, there were so many aspects of the client’s space that remained enjoyable, and overall, they wanted to keep the essence and existing color scheme.

The prime example of this was with the cabinetry. The current stain and color of the cabinetry worked, so we decided to simply refinish the cabinets to make them look new again. We also added soft-close fasteners to the hinges of the cabinets to help increase the durability of the cabinets as well as extend their longevity. This simple change gives the kitchen a more modern feel! We also increased the longevity of the cabinets by adding some rectangular trim to the sides of the cabinets on the sink island to prevent damage when opening the lid to the trash can.

One large issue with the kitchen was that the cooktop and vent hood were both broken, so we replaced each with new and upgraded fixtures. In terms of the existing countertops, the clients were perfectly satisfied, but the backsplash needed to go :)

We removed and replaced the light-colored stone backsplash with a beautiful rectangular glass mosaic tile containing various hues of beige and brown to tie into the existing colors already found in the space.

Moving on to the kitchen island, we replaced the dated paneling and replaced it with a smooth, modern panel. To add flare to the kitchen, we painted the island a rich brown color, accentuating the space. The brown color matched one of the shades of brown in the backsplash to tie those surfaces together and create a cohesive design.

To further refresh the space, the striped wallpaper was removed and the walls were painted a lovely warm beige. On the floor, some of the existing tiles were cracking or becoming loose. We took out the existing tiles and replaced them with tiles of the same size, but rather than an out-of-date brown color, we chose a tile with various shades of beige to match the walls and backsplash.

Just a few other changes that we made:

  • Replacing the sink faucet
  • Installing a new light fixture over the island to serve as the focal point of the kitchen
  • Added some extra electrical outlets throughout the living area
  • Repainted the walls, ceiling, and trim
  • Replaced the lighting fixture over the dining area with a gorgeous matte black candelabra chandelier.
  • Refinished the laundry room cabinets, added a fresh coat of paint, and trim.

All these changes combined immediately created a warm, inviting, and REFRESHED space!

Our clients were extremely satisfied with the finished product and were thrilled that their new space was exactly what they envisioned. The clients knew they were happy with the space, but they wanted to give it a fresh look and further increase its functionality. We are so pleased that we were able to help give them the space they desired with this kitchen and living area refresh.
