Recent kitchen & bathroom remodel in College Station!

This is one of our favorite home remodeling projects we’ve worked on recently, as it gave us the chance to design in the Mid-Century Modern style. This style is very unique and not often used in home design anymore, so this project was very special to us.

Fun fact: This home was designed and built in the 1960s by local architect Theo R. Holleman during the peak of the Mid-Century Modern movement. The home easily stands out among the other houses in the area, so we wanted to make sure to honor the original design and style of the home when improving the interior.

This remodeling project included a light refresh of the kitchen with new countertops and backsplash, converting the downstairs full bathroom into 2 separate bathrooms.

The full bathroom became an ensuite for the downstairs bedroom, which added immense value to the home.

In its existing state, the bathroom was a very cool and dark space. There was dark gray tile on the floor, shower walls, and around the vanity.  Unfortunately, there were no windows to allow for any natural light to enter the space. As expected, the colors and materials in the bathroom felt a bit out of place and didn’t necessarily fit the style of the home.

And so we began! Firstly, we first built a new wall dividing the existing bathroom in half; one side for the 1/2 bathroom and the other for the full bathroom. However, we needed additional space to incorporate everything needed for the full bathroom, so we took the space from the alcove in the bedroom to expand the new full bathroom all the way to the rear exterior wall of the home. Because the rear exterior wall was finished with siding, it was easy for us to add a small transom window in the bathroom. This allowed for some much-needed natural light to enter the space.

When designing the vanity, the clients opted for a more modern look by choosing a floating vanity, meaning the cabinets hang off the wall and do not touch the ground. The cabinet doors are slab style, which means there is no paneling or decoration of any kind, which is another very modern touch. The vanity was made of maple wood and was finished in a warm golden stain. The vanity was topped with a stunning sparkling white flecked quartz with a 3-inch edge cap, which gives the illusion of a much thicker countertop.

The clients did not care for a tub in this bathroom, so we constructed a spacious full shower instead, with a niche and bench that is tiled in a beautiful sage green tile arranged in a vertical stack pattern. These colors and patterns fit in seamlessly with the Mid-Century Modern style!

This bathroom also included a Japanese-style toilet, with features such as a seat warmer and bidet. To illuminate the space further, we installed two recessed can lights in addition to spectacular globe-shaped vanity lights- which is a key element in Mid-Century Modern design.

Now, to finish out the space! We installed stunning marble-look hexagon tiles for the bathroom and shower floors and opted for striking champagne bronze fixtures to complete this Mid-Century Modern aesthetic.

The half bathroom is fairly similar to the full bathroom, sharing the same paint, stain, and fixture colors. Since this space was now completely separated, the clients wanted to go with a different vibe to make that room feel slightly different.

Instead of using a color such as the green found in the shower tiles of the full bathroom, we installed a wallpaper accent wall. It was a stunning yet subtle pink color with gold accents in a rectangular geometric pattern. This wallpaper immediately gives a pop to the space, allowing the space’s personality to exist on its own,  while still staying true to the Mid-Century Modern style.

Moving into the kitchen for a refresh!

We wanted to lighten up the space with a refresh! We replaced the colorful backsplash with a white glazed ceramic tile from Bedrosians tile and stone.

The old countertops were black so we replaced those with a white Statuary Classique Quartz which is elegant, durable and requires virtually no maintenance.

We are SO very honored that our clients trusted us to redesign their space, as it’s such a unique and historic home in our area. Giving our clients the bathroom remodel and kitchen upgrades they desired was a dream for us and we were thrilled to be a part of it!
