Our designer, Preston McMath, is here to discuss choosing the right grout color for your tile!

When it comes to designing your kitchen or bathroom, grout color may seem like a minor decision that goes unnoticed. However, it actually plays a crucial role in the overall aesthetic of the space. While grout may not be the focal point of your design, it has the power to either enhance or detract from the room’s appearance. Choosing the right grout color is imperative, and you’ll be surprised by the multitude of options available.

So, how do you go about selecting the perfect grout color?

There are a few factors to consider when making this decision. The most important question to ask yourself is whether you want the tile to stand out or blend in with the overall design. Some individuals prefer their tile to be a prominent feature, creating a striking visual impact. In such cases, opting for a contrasting grout color is key. This allows the shape and color of the tile to be easily seen and appreciated.

For instance, if you have light-colored tile, selecting a dark grout color would be ideal. The timeless combination of black and white is a classic example of high contrast that never fails to impress. The allure of dark, black tiles highlighted by crisp, bright white grout is simply captivating. Another winning combination for transitional or modern design styles is clean white tile paired with dark gray grout. These high-contrast choices are often sought-after by homeowners.

Conversely, if you have dark-colored tile, opting for a light grout color is the way to go. This choice adds layers and depth to your space, contributing to a delightful design. On the other hand, some people prefer their tiles to blend in, and that is a valid choice as well. In such cases, you would do the opposite by selecting a grout color that closely matches the tile’s color. A popular example is using classic 3×6 white subway tiles with matching white grout, creating a simple and clean appearance that stands the test of time.

Alternatively, consider pairing a matte black picket tile with black grout for a bold or moody look. This combination works well in more modern or contemporary design styles, while a white-and-white pairing is better suited for traditional spaces. Your desired design style can greatly influence your choice of grout color.

However, matching grout colors to bold tile colors like red, blue, or green can be challenging. If your tile already has a vibrant hue, it’s best to avoid matching the grout color, as it may appear overwhelming and detract from the overall design. When selecting such a tile color, choosing a contrasting grout color is typically recommended.

Most readily available grout colors fall within the neutral range, including shades of white, beige, brown, gray, and black. In most cases, a bold tile color looks best with a shade of white grout. However, there are instances where beige, gray, or black grout can create a pleasing effect, depending on the tile’s color scheme.

Choosing the right grout color can be a challenge, even for designers. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance on this matter. Design professionals or resources like Houzz and Pinterest can provide invaluable inspiration and ideas to guide your grout color selection. While grout may not be the main design feature, it is an essential supporting element that can truly make your tile and home shine, setting it apart from the rest.
