There are many things that make us proud of the College Station/Bryan community – none more so than Project Unity. Project Unity is a non-profit providing a story of individual heroism in the context of service and community.
Their mission reads, “Project Unity aims to empower and strengthen our community by caring for its people, supporting and educating its families, and fostering hope and change in the lives of all involved.” What makes Project Unity so special is the degree to which they have lived up to that mission from their inception on.
In 1995 Jeannie McGuire secured funding and started Project Unity. Over the next twenty years Project Unity, under McGuire’s leadership, has won many national, state and local awards for the service they provide to those most in need. Each year has seen an increase in the services provided by this organization.
McGuire’s efforts have provided more than assistance to those in need. Through grant writing and employment skills training, she has brought economic stimulus to our community. She brought a good deal of recognition to our community. Her efforts have also helped bridge the socio-economic gap that is an inevitable part of our heritage.
In 1996, while still in its infancy, Project Unity was selected one of six national winners of the “Award for Excellence in Community Collaboration for Children and Youth Programs.” In 1997 Project Unity was selected as one of six model programs featured in the national publication. In 2000 Project Unity was chosen as one of 11 programs in Texas with funding to provide Temporary Assistants for Needy Families. In 2001 Project Unity was awarded the Daily Point of Light award by former President George Bush.
In an effort to recognize and repay the gifts that Project Unity has brought to our community a group of local businesses is pitching in to provide repairs to the Project Unity building on Beck Street. Flooring is partially provided by Aggieland Carpet One; paint is provided by Chapman’s Paint Company; miscellaneous materials provided by Lowe’s; drywall patching provided by Brian Kubena Drywall Services; volunteer labor will be provided by BB&T, individual contributors, and coordination, labor and miscellaneous materials are provided by Stearns Design Build. This work is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year.
